For me, writing is like the last five minutes
of an eight hour shift when yet more customers continue to pile in… from the
moment I begin to write the only thing I can think about is being finished and
free to do something I enjoy. On the other hand, just like having a job,
the benefits of expanding my talents as a writer are far greater that putting
it off completely. Looking back at my history as a writer, I realize I have
only experienced one side to writing and that’s where it has been forced on me
by teachers. I have always been told what to write and when to write it,
instead of writing on topics that I am passionate about. One step in changing
my attitude to one that is positive is to view writing as a flight to unknown
vacation instead of a forced job.
Well your metaphor is kinda crazy but I know what you are saying , and I know writing is really not attractive to me so I just treat it like a job to but not all the time because some times your job will be kinda fun an I do not think writing is fun at all and I also feel like it just take some energy that really isn't needed .
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy all the similes you used throughout this blog. I completely agree with you as I can relate with what the last 5 minutes of a shift is like. It is very important to write about something you are passionate about as you will find more enjoyment out of it. Sometimes even when you are forced to write you can make it enjoyable by writing about something you feel strongly about. By doing this you may find it easier to board your one way ticket to paradise as opposed to finishing a project by a deadline.
ReplyDeleteYou're approach to this blog was great because it's something that not many people would think of, but almost all can relate to. I agree that we only see one side of writing, which is the forced writing. If we step back and allow ourselves to see the positives in writing and actually write something we'd enjoy, maybe we wouldn't always dread it.
ReplyDeleteI think the metaphor you used for this is right on point and very creative. I view writing as a job as well once my shift starts I just want it to be over so I can go do things I want to do instead of work or in the case of class, finish the paper. I also really like how you compared your new outlook on writing to a vacation destination that is unknown. I feel like viewing my writing like this will help me expand on my ideas and formulate the best paper possible.
ReplyDeleteThis might just be the best and most random metaphor! The comparison you make between those last minutes of a shift and writing is completely understandable. I have always dreaded the idea of writing just because I know it's going to be a long and bumpy ride to the finish end.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this post, I feel like you struggle with some issues I struggle with while writing an essay. You metaphor of the job experience was unique and amusing. I have never wanted to write an essay and to have to write about topics that I am not too interested in is always harder to do too. When I write essays, I also try and get it done as quickly as possible and then want to move on with my life. I don't consider writing fun, but I believe it to be easier to write about something that I might be interested in. I can relate to this metaphor because writing is a hassle for me and something I dread to do, which results into me putting off papers to the last minute. I really liked your points about how we should "view writing as a flight to unknown vacation instead of a forced job." I plan on doing that the next time I sit down to write my paper.
