Blog post #1

I think that the things I'm most anxious about when I'm writing are the way I put my ideas on the paper and the page length. I transferred from a high school to another after my first year, and the teacher I had in the first one put me a very bad grade at my very first essay without really explaining why and without having previously explained how to do one. From then on I have had absolutely no confidence in my writing ability even though my next teacher tried to change my mind. This second teacher has always told me I have good ideas and that the organisation of my texts were fairly good as well but the way I'm writing them is not very clear. I am more of a pragmatic person and I go straight to the goal, I then struggle to explain and emphasize my ideas correctly. Most of the time I begin to write with a sentence that summaries my whole idea and I then have nothing left to say. That's why I also struggle to reach the page length. I try to put some sentences that are somehow useless and that don't support my ideas only to reach that required length. And now I'm even more anxious about writing because everything that I'm going to write is going to be in english, which I have only learned at school for some years and that is definitely not my first language. I miss a lot of vocabulary and my grammar is not very good as well. This is an other factor that's being added to the list.

  1. That's funny, because I am more of the opposite. Whenever I write a paper my teachers tell me I write too much and add too much "fluff", which is just useless sentences basically restating what I have previously said. I usually struggle with cutting back my page length and getting straight to the point on my papers, Also, that's very interesting that English is not your first language. I wish I could speak more than one language, I heard that people who are bilingual are smarter but I don't know.

  2. I struggle with length as well because the mentality I have when writing is to be short and to the point.. which clearly doesn't work with a paper that is several pages long. I'm hoping to learn how to expand on my ideas and write a good paper without just writing a bunch of "fluff" as Erin said. I think its very cool as well you are able to break the language barrier and be able to still produce a very well written work in english.

  3. I'm the same way. When i write i try to keep it short and sweet. I have a tough time with getting an idea and stretching it out for more then it really is. Normally ill only write a fraction of the length that i am supposed to leaving me with nothing and unable to finish my paper with the proper length
