Blog #1

There are three main things I worry about when writing; paper length, flow of ideas, and quality of content. I don't know how many papers I've had to write where there was a certain number of pages or words needed in order to get a good grade, but it's safe to say I've struggled with meeting the required length on almost all of them. I constantly find myself trying to add extra sentences and filler words into my papers just to barely meet that length requirement. A lot of the time my paper turns out very bland because I’ve added so many filler sentences. I very frequently have trouble with my flow of ideas in papers as well. In high school I remember getting quite a few marks on my paper saying “this paragraph is ‘choppy’” or “these ideas don’t go together”. I usually have good ideas when I’m writing, I just struggle with putting them down on paper in a way that makes seems and flows well. Finally, I sometimes struggle with the quality of my writing. Like I said earlier, I often times have really good ideas, but I just can’t seem to word them and put them down on paper so that they sound good. It’s almost as if my brain is all over the place when I write, pulling ideas from every direction, but my hands don’t know how to put them down the right way. I’ve always tried to work on my writing problems, and I’ve definitely gotten better at it, but there is still room for improvement.

  1. I would recommend that you research as much as you can on your topic before you begin writing. It is surprising how some little details can work their way into your paper. Those small details that you discover could end up replacing many of the filler sentences that you have to put in. That would usually make for a much more in depth paper.

  2. I'm in the same boat with you! Especially when you talk about the filler sentences or those extra words just to reach the minimum word count for those endless essays that students have to write. I feel that both me and you, as writers, need to attempt to plan out our writing beforehand and hopefully that would help us. Writing has never been my strong suite and that has made me feel sort of being in last place in a race, everyone ahead of me is great at running the race, while I am lacking behind (as a writer).
