I think the "to discover who I am," or third reason for writing a personal essay is probably the one that resonated the most with me. I feel as if every time I go to write something that's personal, I'm learning more and more about myself. When I'm writing for myself, it's usually much more relaxed than if I were to be writing for a teacher or any other form of authority. Even for the snap shots paper though, I was able to write as though I were talking casually to someone. This not only informed the reader of who I am and what my personality's like, but it also reiterated things about myself, that I hadn't really realized were that prevalent. While reading through all of the reasons as to why anyone would want to, or should write a personal essay, they were all helpful. I also really liked the one where it said, "I discover how much I know that I didn't know I knew. Writing educates me." This relates to the whole, "getting to know myself" reason as well. I do sometimes have other reasons for writing, whether it be to relieve stress, or just for the fun of it. I think that in the future, when I go to write an outline or a first draft, I will stop and think about each of these reasons.

This is why I enjoy this class! It allows us to improve our writing without the pressure and anxiety of the teacher grading it on their own scale. Writing for myself, and anyone writing for their own self, allows the person to sit down in a relaxed manner and write down how they truly feel about writing, and not forcing something on a piece of paper because a teacher told them to do so. If a student is just copying down facts to complete an assignment, he/she will never truly learn the art of writing; but this class allows us to learn about ourselves and how we can truly write.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy writing for myself. I agree with what you said about how it helps you discover things about yourself that you haven't even realized before. I also agree with Andrew in the sense that writing for yourself is much more relaxed and easier and time seems to go by a lot faster. I hate writing research papers for classes such as Biology because the subject obviously doesn't interest me and I get very bored and procrastinate with it, but for our assignment such as the snapshot in this class I enjoy writing it and didn't consider it a chore.
ReplyDeleteOften times when I write about or for myself I learn more about myself. I always think I know everything about myself then I write about me and I learn even more. Writing can open your eyes to things you didn't even know about yourself. I'm not a big fan of writing but when I do write, I always learn something new.
ReplyDeleteUnlike most english classes, I have had a much easier time writing essays for assignments. Usually, I consider writing an arduous task that comes significantly difficult to me. But this class is different. From the blog posts to the snap shot stories, I feel as if I can write what I truly want to write, which is something I was really never given the opportunity to do. Writing for yourself is like a blessing in disguise. I tend to write in relaxed demeanor when writing for the blog posts because I know there is no wrong answer. By doing this, I have learned so many different aspects of who I am. If we are the ones writing the paper, shouldn't we always write for ourselves first, then our audience?
