"I had to decide to forget Spanish when I began my education. To succeed in the classroom, I needed psychologically to sever my ties with Spanish."

This phrase was very disappointing to read. I don't necessarily think that you have to drop everything just because something else is also very important to you. For instance, if I were to go after something that was my dream, but it contradicted with my past or roots, I would still continue to uphold whatever it was in my past that was different. In this reading, it was that he had to drop Spanish all together just because he wanted to pursue his career in English Literature. I think that he could've definitely still cherished his native language while still wanting to succeed in something else. He could put more emphasis on the English sure, but I wouldn't say he would've had to drop it all together. I feel like nowadays we think we have to drop everything else in order to achieve something greater, but I don't think that's true at all. I think we can balance certain things in our life that are important to us.

  1. I used this same quote and had the exact response; why does learning English, or any other topic for that matter, supersede something you've grown up with for your entire life? I like how you feel and think people can still go after their dream but still remember and make time for the things that we've had before. I question the movies where the actors become so attached to something they forgot their responsibilities, friends, and even family for it. I think if something is truly special to a person, like their native language, nothing can come in the way to make them permanently remove it from their life.

  2. I also wrote about the same quote and I had kind of the same feeling while reading it. I also think that you don't need to drop something because something else is more important for you at that particular moment. You can always keep it and you never know, maybe later, you'll come back to it, and this "something" that wasn't so important to you before becomes the most important thing.

  3. This is kind of sad, but some people feel the need to sacrifice some things in order to achieve another. I disagree with what the above comments said, because sometimes to get to that level of excellence, things have to balance themselves out (sacrifice). Nobody at a high level in any field has achieved what they had without pain or a cost.
